TOMMY HILFIGER x ZENDAYA SS19

“If there’s not a seat there, go create your own table!,” Zendaya told audiences at Vogue’s Forces of Fashion conference back in October and true to her word, the star is blazing her own trail. With a show at the Comédie & Studio des Champs-Elysées, the landmark theater, she introduced the world to her Tommy x Zendaya collaboration, a luxe ‘70s-inspired collection, while showcasing the talents of a global cast that reflected all shades of blackness.

The lineup featured four decades-worth of beauty and offered a stunning overview of modeling’s history. Pat Cleveland, the Halston muse and ‘70s star, sauntered down the red, white, and blue runway as only she can, while supermodels Veronica Webb and Beverly Peele made a graceful appearance, as did Alexander McQueen regular Debra Shaw. For model fans there was almost too much to take in; ‘90s French phenom Chrystele Saint Louis Augustin, Jourdan Dunn, Grace Bol, Tami Williams, girls of the moment Winnie Harlow and Halima Aden, and the coup de grâce: a dancing Grace Jones.

The presence of Jones in a metallic blazer and bodysuit dancing to “Pull Up to the Bumper” was as close to a defining moment as Fashion Month is likely to get. At 70, she still captivates in a way few can. Thanks to Zendaya and casting director, Michelle Lee black women of all ages, shapes, sizes, and shades came together to create an event that was heartwarming, exuberant, and undeniably fun. Fashion Month could use more of that inclusive, life-affirming spirit.
